Daciea’s Analysis Paper
Everyone is expected to get treated fairly but is it always so? There’s some people that consider themselves to be higher than others, whether it’s their race, background, job, or even their appearance. In this research titled “Racism and social determinants of psychosis” by professor Anglin you can see where people of color struggled to survive within schools, health care systems, and policies in society. In the analysis paper Anglin argues how structural racism is embedded in our daily habits not caused by our actions but by policies, laws and practices and equalities which affects education, housing and healthcare . Structural racism causes the school and healthcare system to target Black individuals causes health issues both emotionally and physicallyHair discrimination does not protect the cultural significance of Black Boy hair styles. We see this when Anglin mentions “There have been a number of incidents where Black boys have been suspended or forced to cut their locked natural hair, prompting the need for legal protections from such cultural hair discrimination” (pg #1). Hair discrimination can lead to a bigger problem than it really is. Why are black boys being judged for something that they have no control over? These problems are mainly taking place in the learning and work environment. Black people’s hair isn’t a trend, it’s naturally curly and versatile, this becomes a problem when they are getting kicked out of school because of their appearance. It’s not fair to deprive them of their education and natural rights over ignorance. This is a problem that white people don’t experience and this is because of racism. This shows that they value straight hair and they don’t acknowledge non-white students’ feelings when they are biassed against them.
Black people are being deprived of their educational rights. Anglin supports this by stating “As demonstrated in Figure 1, the neighbourhood is directly connected to the quality of educational opportunities available, which is connected to employment opportunities or lack thereof and the probability of resorting to nonlegal forms of survival” (pg #) Being Black comes with a lot of backlash and sometimes unwanted attention. Black people are stereotyped to be seen as criminals but not for their effort in doing good. Why does the color of our skin have to determine the access specific people get in the world? This connects to the importance of Education. In other words, good education takes people further in life and forcing innocent people to have poor education and lack of opportunity is unfair. Considering how certain jobs require certain qualifications and without a great education they can’t have a good job, house or even provide for themselves/family. An unequal resource school creates unwanted behaviors such as stealing, doing drugs, being disrespectful, which comes with backlash but not what led to it. This shows us that structural racism exists in our education and it creates a cycle of psychosis.
Black people are at a disadvantage for receiving equal and valuable health care in comparison to White people. Angling argues, “Black people are more likely than non-Hispanic White people to receive this treatment .Black and Latinx groups are more likely than non-Hispanic White people to drop out of treatment” (page #). This explains howRacism in the health care system leads to Black and Latinx people needing more treatment for their mental health, however, they are most likely to drop out. This is because they still get treated unfairly due to the color of their skin. In addition, hospitals prescribe the same medication for non-Hispanic White and people of color but it seems to only work for White people. This shows us that the medicine they used was made for white people specifically or that they are improperly being diagnosed. This is unfair because they could be experiencing something life threatening but because they are Black they are seen as less human, which results in them getting treated unfairly
In conclusion people who are coloured are seen as less of a human which leads to unfair treatment amongst . The racism amongst them affects their education, employment opportunities, and overall well-being. Structural inequalities in schools, healthcare systems etc leads to a cycle of disadvantage and discrimination. This highlights the urgent need for systemic changes to address and dismantle these deeply rooted biases.
(Explain your major points in the essay) (3 sentences)
Black boys highlight how cultural aspects are often ignored.
Black communities are frequently disadvantaged due to systemic issues.
There is an urgent need for systemic changes in policies and societal structures to ensure fair treatment and opportunities for all individuals, regardless of race.
Dr. Anglin’s main point is that systemic racism harms people of color in many ways, and we need to make significant changes to fix these issues. She researches this topic to raise awareness and push for fair treatment and opportunities for both races, not just white people.
