Stovall, Natasha and Andrew Hsiao, “Building a Movement”,” CUNY Digital History Archive, accessed September 11, 2024, https://cdha.cuny.edu/items/show/411.
Summary:
In “The Village Voice” the authors Natasha Stovall & Andrew Hsiao gives us an insight of a peaceful hunger strike protest that was led by students in the NAC building at CCNY. This protest took place because the students felt as if they were being deprived of their education and future. Yolanda Moses the president of the building was against the protest and asked them to leave at a certain time which they didn’t do, and this led to an arrest of over 30 students. The authors portrays unity through the picture provided with their arms linked together forming a chain of power expressing how they feel and the writing on their shirts. The authors also showed unity through “bringing together unlikely allies” such as the Unionist, Asian community, Sheler resident etc. All these groups wanted the same kind of change so they decided to step out of isolation and that they were stronger together “we were struggling in isolation which leaves us all vulnerable” so they got together and planned the protest for April 25.
Important Quotations
- “Now we’re trying to build a movement that will be a microcosm of the society we want a movement that takes into account the multiple identities we all have” (paragraph 3)
- “We were struggling in isolation which leaves us all vulnerable” (paragraph 3)
Reflection:
The village voice speaks on one of a million protests that took place over the years today. My opinions on this journal sheet are very mutual, I came across zero problems and I feel as if it was correctly written. I do however support unity and I’m all for it especially when it comes to our rights I loved how the author highlighted that different groups came together to make one and fight for their rights. To better understand this document I would research background information about what was taking place during this time which led to this.
